Calculate thick wall pipe stress from radius using Lame's equation.
Lame's equation accounts for the variation in stress with radius. The stress distribution is not uniform across the pipe section. The maximum stress occurs on the inside of the pipe.
Barlow's equation is often used to calculate the hoop stress in thin wall pipes where the stress can be assumed to be uniformly distributed. Lame's equation should be used for thick wall pipes.
