ASME B31.3 Process Piping Branch Reinforcement

Calculate ASME B31.3 process piping required branch reinforcement for welded and extruded branches.

The calculations are valid for right angle welded branches, angled welded branches ≥ 45 degrees, and right anngle extruded branches. Extruded branches must be used for high pressure piping. Use the workbook ASME B31.3 data tables to look up allowable stress data.

CALCULATOR : ASME B31.3 Section 304.3 Pipe Welded Branch Reinforcement (Low Pressure Steel Piping) [PLUS]   ±

Calculate the required replacement area for low pressure piping welded branches using the area replacment area method (ASME B31.3 section 304.3).

Extra replacement area can be provided either by increasing the wall thickness of the header and branch, or by adding reinforcement (such as a reinforcement pad). The required width of a reinforcement pad is calculated for a defined pad thickness. The reinforcement pad thickness should be adjusted so that the entire pad with is inside the reinforcement zone (the actual pad width is the pad width inside the reinforcement zone). Welds and collars etc can be accounted for as an equivalent pad width provided that they are entirely within the reinforcement zone.

The welded branch calculation is valid for right angle branches, and angled branches. The low pressure calculators should be used when the design pressure is less than or equal to the allowed pressure for ASME B16.5 Class 2500 rating for the specified design temperature and material group.
