ASME B31.1 Power Piping Branch Reinforcement

Calculate ASME B31.1 power piping branch reinforcement for welded and extruded branches. Refer to the figures for details (click the resources button on the data bar)

For welded branches the branch angle must be ≥ 45 degrees. The pad reinforcement area also includes any welds or saddles which are inside the reinforcement zone. The extruded branch calculation is valid for right angle branches only. Use the workbook ASME B31.1 data tables to look up allowable stress data.

CALCULATOR : ASME B31.1 Metal Pipe Diameter And Wall Thickness Schedule [FREE]   ±

Calculate ASME B31.1 metal pipe diameter, minimum wall thickness and pressure design thickness from pipe schedule or user defined diameter and wall thickness (ASME B31.1 section 104.1).

CALCULATOR : ASME B31.1 Section 104.3 Pipeline Welded Branch Reinforcement [PLUS]   ±

Calculate required reinforcement area for welded branches (ASME B31.1 section 104.3). The actual reinforcement area includes the pad reinforcement area which is inside the reinforcement zone (the actual area equals the required area if the pad reinforcement is entirely inside the reinforcement zone).

Enter the header, branch and reinforcement wall thickness as either the minimum wall thickness (nominal wall thickness minus the negative fabrication tolerance), or the measured wall thickness. The minimum wall thickness includes the corrosion allowance.

The calculated design thickness is the required wall thickness for pressure containment (it does not include either the corrosion allowance or the fabrication tolerance). The welded branch calculation is valid for right angle branches, and angled branches (≥ 45 degrees).

The replacement area A4 includes reinforcement pads, welds and saddles inside the reinforcement zone.

CALCULATOR : ASME B31.1 Section 102.3 Pipe W Weld Joint Factor From Temperature [FREE]   ±

Calculate the pipe weld joint reduction factor W from the maximum temperature (ASME B31.1 table 102.4.7). For carbon steel the weld joint reduction factor is 1.0.

For other materials, the weld joint reduction factor is interpolated from table 102.4.7.

Note : The calculated weld joint factors are not valid if the metal temperature is greater than the temperature range in appendix A for that particular material.

Tool Input

  • wfactype : Weld Factor Type
    • Wu : User Defined W Factor
    • Tcr : User Defined Creep Temperature
  • T : Design Temperature
