| UNIT : Unit : Light 07 : Luminous Intensity - Luminous Flux per Solid Angle : Unit Conversion Tool
Description : Convert between luminous intensity units.
Standard Unit : STD unit candela [cd] or lumen per steradian [lm/sr].
Discussion : Light is the form of electromagentic radiation which is visible to the human eye. The visible spectrum lies between about 400 and 700 nanometers wavelength. Electromagnetic radiation with a shorter wavelength (ultra-violet), or a longer wavelength (infra-red) is invisible to the human eye. Even within the visible light spectrum, our eyes vary in how well they see see different light frequencies or wavelengths. Research has shown that the light frequency most visible to the human eye is green light with frequency near 555 nanometers wavelength or 540E+12 Hz frequency, although this varies slightly from individual to individual. Light at this wavelength appears yellow green to the human eye.
The base unit for measuring light is the candela, which defines the luminous intensity of a source (originally a candle) in a particular direction. The candela is the luminous intensity of a monochromatic source of frequency 540E+12 hertz, which has a radiant intensity of 1/683 watt per steradian. For light at other frequencies, the "visibility" of the light must be factored using an empirical correlation such as the V-lamda curve.
Luminous intensity or light intensity. One candela = lumen per solid angle (cd = lm/sr) - the intensity of the light energy radiating from the light source - the light energy per solid angle.
