Pipeng : Ellinas Walker and Wierzbicki Suh Pipeline Dent Calculation Module

Pipeline And Tubular Dent Calculators

Description : Calculators for denting displacement, absorbed energy and impact force for pipelines and other circular structures.

Discussion : Three denting models are provided: Ellinas Walker, General and Wierzbicki Suh. All three models can be used to estimate the dent depth, indentation force and absorbed energy. The Wierzbicki Suh model also provides an estimate of the dent initiation force and energy. An impact with less force or energy than the initiation force energy will not form a dent.

CALC : Pipe : Wall Thickness 032 : Pipeline And Tubular Dent Force And Energy From Dent Displacement : Calculator

Description : Calculate the dent force and dent absorbed energy from the dent depth for a pipeline or circular tubular structure.

Discussion : Use this calculator to assess pipeline dents of known depth.

Calculation Steps :

  • Dent force
  • Dent energy

Options :

  • Dent model : Ellinas Walker : General : Wierzbicki Suh

Input Variables :

  • D = Pipe Nominal Diameter
  • Sy = Pipeline SMYS - Specified Minimum Yield Stress
  • Z = Dent Type
  • d = Pipeline Dent Depth
  • tn = Pipe Nominal Wall Thickness

Output Variables :

  • E = Pipeline Dent Absorbed Energy
  • F = Pipeline Applied Dent Force

Calculation :

 If Z = 1 : Ellinas Walker
  F = 37.5 Sy tn 2 √( d / D )
  E = 25 Sy tn 2 d 3 / 2 / √( D )
 Otherwise If Z = 2 : General
  F = 5.3033 Sy tn 2 √( d / tn )
  E = 3.6 Sy tn 2 d 3 / 2 / √( tn )
 Otherwise If Z = 3 : Wierzbicki Suh
  F = 5.78881 Sy tn 2 √( d / tn )
  E = 3.85921 Sy tn 2 d 3 / 2 / √( tn )
