Keulegan-Carpenter Number Calculators

Description : Dimensionless Keulegen-Carpenter number or period number calculators.

Discussion : The Keulegen-Carpenter number (also known as the period number) describes the relative importance of drag forces and inertial forces in oscillating flow (typically wave flow). It can also be appliled to objects oscillating in a stationary fluid. For small Keulegen-Carpenter numbers inertia forces dominate. At large Keulegen-Carpenter numbers drag forces dominate.

Kc = V T / L

where

V = oscillating velocity amplitude
T = oscillation period
L = Characteristic Length
Kc = Keulegen-Carpenter number

The velocity amplitude is the amplitude of the oscillating component of flow. It does not include any steady state components (eg current). For pipelines or tubulars the characteristic length is equal to the outside diameter including coatings.

CALC : Flow : Numbers 101 : Dimensionless Keulegan-Carpenter Number #1 - User Defined Velocity : Calculator

Description : Calculate the dimensionless Keulegen-Carpenter number for oscillating flow, user defined velocity.

Discussion : The velocity amplitude is user defined. For oscillation motion other than wave motion, enter the oscillation period as the wave period.

Input Variables :

  • L = Characteristic Length
  • T = Ocean Wave Period
  • Ua = Horizontal Velocity Amplitude

Output Variables :

  • Kc = Dimensionless Keulegen-Carpenter Number

Calculation :

Kc = Ua T / L

CALC : Flow : Numbers 102 : Dimensionless Keulegan-Carpenter Number #2 - Calculated Ocean Wave Velocity : Calculator

Description : Calculate the dimensionless Keulegen-Carpenter number for oscillating wave flow, calculated wave velocity.

Discussion : The wave horizontal velocity amplitude is calculated for ocean waves. Check that the convergence check value is close to or equal to one. The function working is not shown in the check calculations.

Options :

  • Wave type : Airy, Stokes or Cnoidal

Input Variables :

  • H = Ocean Wave Height
  • L = Characteristic Length
  • T = Ocean Wave Period
  • W = Wave Type
  • d = Water Depth
  • z = Height Above Seabed

Output Variables :

  • Kc = Dimensionless Keulegen-Carpenter Number
  • Ua = Horizontal Velocity Amplitude
  • cvg = Convergence Check

Calculation :

list( Ua , Kc , cvg ) = KeulegenCarpenter( H , d , T , z , L , W )
